Battle of Empress Augusta Bay

The story of a resounding Allied victory over the Japanese, and the search for a Japanese cruiser.

In October 1943 the Us landed 14,000 troops at Empress Augusta Bay, Bougainville.The Japanese were intent on crushing this strategic landing and sent Rear Admiral Sentaro Omori with a squadron of 4 cruisers and 6 destroyers to crush the landing.

Using radar the US forces fought a bitter battle which decimated the Japanese who not only lost a Cruiser and destroyer but who had to withdraw with all the remaining ships badly damaged.

The battle site and US staging area, together with the search for the cruiser will make exciting documentary material.
