Fortunes won and lost in the great tidal streams of the China Strait Samarai, quite literally the Pearl of the Pacific. In the early 1900s and up to WW2, Samarai was a major producer of Mother of Pearl and pearls. The waters in the area are some of the most treacherous in the Pacific with tidal streams reaching up to 7kts.
Deep water, raging currents, sharks, antiquated equipment and isolation all took their toll. The diving is dangerous but unbelievably fantastic. Old pearl divers in the late 60s revealed many of these secrets and extraordinary dive sites to me.
